Classifications

Competitive 

This classification is open to all dancers of all skill and experience levels.

Pre-Competitive 

This classification is intended for those dancers who receive three hours or less of weekly dance instruction and who wish to experience adjudication on stage in a supportive environment of their peers. Groups in this class may include competitive students, provided that 75% of the registrants in the routine qualify as pre-competitive students.

Novice 

This classification is available to those dancers competing for the first time.  Groups in this class must comprise of at least 75% first time competitors. Solos, duets, and trios in this class must comprise of dancers who have never before competed as a solo, duet, or trio but may have participated in competitive groups. ​

Categories

Acro-dance – A combination of dance and acro technique. 

Character Ballet – A dance portraying a character, utilizing classical technique. Soft slippers or pointe shoes may be used. Props may be used.  

Classical Ballet – A dance incorporating classical ballet technique to classical music with no props. 

Classical Pointe – A routine incorporating classical ballet technique using pointe shoes.

Contemporary/Modern – A routine incorporating primarily ballet or modern technique.

Hip Hop – A dance using hip hop and street dance technique.

Jazz – A routine using jazz technique. (A limit of three Acro tricks per routine).

Lyrical – Routine using jazz technique to express emotion. 

Musical Theatre – A dance in a theatrical style. Use of pre-recorded or live vocals are permitted in this category. 

Open – Any dance not suitable for other categories.  â€‹

Tap – Dance using various rhythmic patterns. Pre-recorded tap sounds may not be used.

Competition Information

  • Any use of video or still camera equipment is strictly prohibited. In keeping with the Privacy Act,  to show respect for others’ rights to privacy, cameras, video cameras, and all recording devices are not allowed in the theater. Anyone discovered photographing or recording any dance numbers  will be asked to leave the competition area. 

  • Music, choreography and costumes must be appropriate for family viewing. Routines that contain racial slurs, profanity or derogatory language may be disqualified at the sole discretion of Parkland Dance Festival. In the event of a routine being disqualified, the studio instructor will be notified by a Parkland Dance Festival executive member.

  • Music must be uploaded to the DanceBug platform no later than March 17, 2025.

  • Re-dances will be permitted with a 5-point reduction from the score. There will be no penalty for  re-dance due to technical difficulties. 

  • Video adjudication will be provided for each entry. 

  • Marks will be provided in electronic format with all adjudications at the end of the competition to  the dance studio director. 

  • In case of ties within an award category, ties will be broken, and a single winner chosen by the  Adjudicator. Most promising awards will be awarded at the sole discretion of the Adjudicator.

  • The decision of the adjudicator is final. 

  • Substances, which alter the stage, are prohibited. 

  • Tap shoes are to be worn on the stage only. They are not to be worn in change rooms, bathrooms,  hallways or the gymnasium. 

  • During adjudication sessions, all competitors from the session will be invited to join the adjudicator on stage and medals will be awarded at this time. 

  • No Food or Drink is allowed in the theater, dressing room, or run-thru space. 

  • Parkland Dance Festival is not responsible for any injury or loss of property. 

  • We respectfully ask that dancers refrain from taking pictures or video in the dressing room area.

Group Size

  • Solos – One Dancer 

  • Duets – Two Dancers 

  • Trios – Three Dancers 

  • Small Group – Four to Nine Dancers 

  • Large Group – Ten to Nineteen Dancers 

  • Line – Twenty Dancer and over

Time Limits

  • Solos – 2.5 minutes 

  • Duets – 3 minutes 

  • Trios – 3 minutes 

  • Small & Large Group – 4 minutes 

  • Line – 5 minutes

The penalty for any dance exceeding the time limit is a 5 mark reduction. 

Marking System

  • Platinum: 95+ 

  • Gold with Honours: 90 - 94.99 

  • Gold – 85 - 89.99 

  • Silver – 80 - 84.99 

  • Bronze – 75 - 79.99 

Adjudication

  • Awards and scholarships will be communicated electronically at the end of the competition.  

  • Competitive award categories include most outstanding awards, most promising awards and  adjudicator’s choice awards. Most Outstanding is based on the highest mark in a category. Most  promising awards will be awarded at the sole discretion of the Adjudicator. 

  • The Most Outstanding Pre-Competitive Award will be based on the highest mark in the Pre Competitive Classification, with one award for all categories and age groups combined. 

  • The Most Outstanding Novice Award will be based on the highest mark in the Novice  Classification, with one award for all categories and age groups combined. 

  • Regarding all marks-based awards, ties will be broken and a single winner chosen by the  Adjudicator.
